April 2022: The MDL Paraquat class action judge will have a status conference on April 1st to review where the litigation is headed and how best to take the bellwether lawsuits forward for trial in November 2022. 44 new paraquat lawsuits have been added to the MDL in the last two weeks. At this pace, April 2022 will be the busiest month for new files yet. Last week, the parties filed their class-action bellwether picks with the Paraquat MDL judge. Those choices, however, have not been made public.
May 2022: In the last month, over 50 new cases have been added to the Paraquat Lawsuit Multidistrict Litigation (MDL). A group of six patients was recently selected by the Paraquat MDL court for the initial Paraquat Parkinson's disease bellwether trials. As a result, the first trial in November 2022 is approaching soon. The strategy is to select 16 paraquat claims from among the almost 1000 Parkinson's disease litigation claims filed. Following some limited fact discovery in these instances, paraquat attorneys on both sides submitted a preference list to the MDL court, ranking the 16 cases in order of priority. Attorneys for plaintiffs seek the finest facts for their clients, while defense attorneys want the worst. The judge whittled the list down to six Paraquat claims based on these rankings.

School districts have faced numerous lawsuits over the decades for sexual abuse claims. As a result, victims of sexual abuse are settling lawsuits with school districts that failed their students. The experienced school sexual abuse attorneys at Manly, Stewart & Finaldi have recovered more than $400 million on behalf of their clients in these landmark cases:
Los Angeles County - $262 Million +: Los Angeles Unified School District settled 81 child sexual abuse claims resulting from the sexual abuse of students at Miramonte Elementary School by former teacher Mark Berndt for $142 Million. This is the largest child sex abuse settlement against any public school district in the United States. Manly, Stewart & Finaldi has settled cases against other schools within LAUSD and Torrance USD in excess of $120 million.
San Bernardino County - $42 Million +: Redlands Unified School District in San Bernardino County has paid more than $42 million to former students claiming sexual abuse by teachers since 2016. Alleged perpetrators include Kevin Kirkland, Laura Whitehurst, Brian Townsley, and Joel Koonce.
Orange County - $13 Million +: 12 female Orange County water polo players settled a lawsuit alleging sexual abuse by a high school coach for $13.85 million.
Anthony Alcala, a 28-year-old Huntington Beach resident, was arrested on April 3, 2025, following an investigation, by the Orange County Sheriff’s Department’s Special Victims Detail, into allegations that he engaged in sexual relationships with underage female athletes between 2017 and 2023. Working as a wrestling coach at El Modena High School in Orange and Foothill High School in Santa Ana, and previously at Premier Wrestling (formerly Somar Wrestling) in Placentia, Alcala is accused of grooming the teens and initiating sexual contact while in a position of authority and trust.
Court records and a public lawsuit filed on June 12, 2025, allege that one victim became pregnant at age 16 and was taken by Alcala to obtain an abortion. The complaint further asserts that the assaults spanned multiple locations, including school premises, vehicles, hotels, and private facilities owned by Alcala, persisting even during the COVID‑19 pandemic when he held clandestine wrestling sessions in a warehouse. Alcala faces multiple felony charges including sexual intercourse with a minor, statutory rape, sexual penetration of a minor, and oral copulation with a minor under age 16 by an adult 21 or older. The arrest sparked widespread criticism of institutional oversight, with legal experts citing systemic failures in school safety protocols. In response, the plaintiffs have filed a civil lawsuit against Alcala and the Orange and Tustin Unified School Districts, accusing the districts of negligent hiring and supervision, asserting that school staff failed to act on warning signs or reports about his behavior.
The law imposes strict time limits on abuse claims and delaying action could mean forfeiting the compensation and closure you deserve.
